B/A United is far bigger than some Premier League clubs – George Afriyie – Ghana Sports Online

Former Ghana FA Vice President George Afriyie has insisted B/A United remain one of the strong pillars of Ghana football and believes the Sunyani-based club could play a significant role in securing sponsorship for the second-tier league.

Afriyie, a former CAF AFCON Organising Committee member and President of Planners Athletic Club, has insisted that the Apostle of Power Soccer is bigger than some clubs playing in the Ghanaian top-flight.

United have been playing in the second-tier league in Ghana for almost six seasons now since their relegation from the top-flight.

The side, which is headed by Major Kwame Baah, was comfortably leading the table in Zone I before the league fell to the COVID-19.

The subject of sponsorship was widely discussed on Thursday’s Zoom Conference featuring sports administration gurus George Afriyie, Winfried Osei Kwaku and Nana Yaw Amponsah.

Afriyie, whose has a lot of experience under his belt in managing clubs in the second-tier league, highlighted on some key points that will aide in securing sponsorship.

“If you look at clubs in the Bono, [Bono East] and Ahafo regions for instance, most of them are community clubs. Clubs like Berekum Arsenal, B/A United and [Bofoakwa Tano] used to play in the top-flight league and have a strong following. As a matter of fact, if you look at B/A United they are by far bigger than some of the Premier League clubs,” he told Ohene Brenya of Happy FM.

“These clubs who pull a lot of fans into their match venues can be used as the bait to draw sponsorship for the Division One League because they already have their numbers and these can be leveraged upon,” he added.

United have reportedly entered into an agreement with Spanish trainer Ruben Pinto to head their technical directorship role when football resumes in the country.
